Dec. 16, 2022 – Toronto: Mayor Tory visited the Board of the Islamic Foundation Mosque in Scarborough on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022. He addressed the congregation in the wake of Monday’s unfortunate incident involving an individual who aggressively intruded into the congregation and caused a physical confrontation with the Imam leading the prayer service.
He said he was relieved to learn no one was hurt, but questions remain involving the mental state of the intruding person and what further actions the available evidence supports. He thanked the congregants who stepped in to help and Toronto Police for responding to this incident and investigating.
He further said he would continue to be in close touch with the police and thank them for putting additional security measures in place at the mosque, leading a security audit and just being present to reassure and keep anxious members safe.
While at the mosque, he reaffirmed and stressed that it is our collective responsibility to keep all places of worship safe. He also said he would continue to work with them and the Toronto Police to ensure that Torontonians feel safe in their place of worship, without exception.
