January 09, 2023, Virginia, US: A six-year-old boy shot and injured his teacher in the eastern US state of Virginia during an altercation on Friday. The teacher is improving and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The child was taken into custody soon after the teacher suffered life-threatening injuries, reported the Associated Press. No children were hurt in the incident at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News city of Virginia, the police said in a statement.
The US teacher authorities say was shot by a six-year-old student is a hard-working educator devoted to her students and enthusiastic about the profession that runs in her family, fellow teachers and city officials say. John Eley III, a former Newport News School Board member, identified the first-grade teacher as 25-year-old Abby Zwerner.
Newport News police chief Drew told reporters that the student had deliberately shot the teacher. The police did not share details about how the student acquired the gun in the shooting or how the altercation unfolded inside the classroom. The US reported 44,000 gun-related deaths last year, according to the Gun Violence Archive database. The recent attack is an addition to a spate of school shootings that have taken place in the US.
