January 11, 2023, New York: The Federal Aviation Administration grounded hundreds of flights across the United States following a nationwide outage on Wednesday morning.
Normal service is beginning to resume after hundreds of flights across the United States were grounded when the US Federal Aviation Administration suffered a catastrophic system error.
An issue with the NOTAMS safety alert system was first reported on January 10, sparking widespread problems across the US and abroad. Technicians from the Air Traffic Control System Command Center worked flat out to fix the problem but warned passengers to buckle up for long delays.
It was the first time since the September 11th attacks that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration grounded all flights. At least 1,162 flights within, into or out of the US were delayed, and 94 were cancelled in what has been dubbed an ‘unprecedented’ event.
The FAA said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon: “Normal air traffic operations are resuming gradually across the US following an overnight outage to the Notice to Air Missions system that provides safety info to flight crews. The ground stop has been lifted. We continue to look into the cause of the initial problem.”
