February 17, 2023, Colombo: Former Deputy Minister Myown Mustaffa has been sentenced to six months in prison for providing a bribe to secure the support of a candidate in the 2010 Presidential Election. It is also learned that Myown Mustaffa’s civic rights have also been suspended for seven years. The former UNP Parliamentarian had been accused of giving Rs. 4.2 million to the then MP Mohammed Musammil of the National Freedom Front for seeking his support in favour of Sarath Fonseka during the 2010 January 26 Presidential poll run-up.
Lalith Weeratunge and Cabraal granted bail:
Former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal were today ordered to be released on bail by Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court in connection with the private plaint filed by Ven. Thiniyawala Palitha Thera for allegedly paying a sum of US$ 6.5 million through the Central Bank to an American businessman named Imaad Shah Zuberi in 2014.
